Unknown Heroes

19″ x 25″ pastel on paper

My illustration friday’s entry for this week’s theme Hero. Based on the images I saw a here a while back (warning: graphic historical images) – I was more moved than any history class I took.

Somehow I always remember this one thing in the mini-series Band of Brothers:

I treasure my remark to a grandson who asked, “Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?” “No”, I answered, “But I served in a company of heroes”. – Richard D. Winters

Quote pulled from IMDB.

very moving – recently i bought some War Diaries for my dad which were the day to day diaries of the 2nd battalion Scots Guards in the First world war [my grandfather's regiment] it was difficult to read about the numbers dead, the gassed and shell shocked – and so many came back and never spoke of their experieneces ever again
