I created a series like this using conte crayons previously. This time I'm working on pastels and trying to learn and experiment with different color combinations. I'll probably do 5 more, but this is enough for now... working with pastels is too messy.
I submitted this to IMT challenge this week..."Series".

19" x 25" pastel on paper
I'm going to give this to my cousin as a gift, she recently gave birth to her first born daughter... I do not think she knows about this blog so this can still be a surprise.

12" x 18" Pastel on Paper
updated: Submitted this for illustration friday's theme "Sport". I was absolutely NOT thinking of "a sport" when I drew this. There's a road, there's a figure... ummm Marathon??? Ha! I always wanted to be able to run long distances, but unfortunately, I do not have strong enough lungs to do that.

19" x 25" pastel on paper
My illustration friday's entry for this week's theme Hero. Based on the images I saw a here a while back (warning: graphic historical images) - I was more moved than any history class I took.
Somehow I always remember this one thing in the mini-series Band of Brothers:
I treasure my remark to a grandson who asked, "Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?" "No", I answered, "But I served in a company of heroes". - Richard D. Winters
Quote pulled from IMDB.

12" x 18" Pastel on Paper
First drawing in a week. It is summer here and I've been doing a lot of yard work in the past couple of days. I'm also trying to find balance since I'm forcing myself to work more again on web development stuff, that means cutting back on drawing and painting.

My Illustration Friday entry for this week's theme nourishment.
I posted already a previous sketch of the still life. So aside from nourishment as food to eat, these native fruits are nourishment also to the culture I'm originally from. By not being able to eat these fruits, in a way, is a craving too of missing out on the whole Philippine culture.

To put it in context, you can read Pao's excellent photo and writing here. Technically, he is not alone... but I think that makes it much worse.

Fish Vendor and Man with Rooster
19" x 25" Pastel on Paper
Today is my dad's birthday and I gave this drawing to him. Back in the Philippines, my grandmother was a fish vendor and my grandfather loved roosters so I just thought this subject would be a good gift.
I'm sure my parents were hoping again I would draw more realistically. They always tell me I do not draw pretty faces and do not know how to draw hands :-)
I also posted the step by step drawing process... please continue on...

Travel Back Home
19" x 25" pastel on paper
My Illustration Friday entry for this week's theme travel.
Travel back home Filipino style :-) There are millions of Filipinos working as contract workers or living outside the Philippines away from family and relatives. Going back home, these boxes are full of gifts and presents.
Why not buy commercial luggages then? Luggages are kinda expensive so those money could buy a lot of stuff to fill in the boxes. Also, using these huge boxes, filipinos could haul up to the maximum limit allowed for their loved ones back home.
update: I posted my studies here.

Crowded Bus Ride, 2005
19" x 25" Pastel on Paper
My illustration friday entry for this week's theme crowded.
One of my favorite theme as I made water color and a study drawing previously. I really hate the feeling of being crowded with so many people. This work is based on personal experience; I rode the bus everyday when I was in the Philippines. Being in a crowded bus was bad, being in a crowded bus in traffic was worse... then being in a crowded bus when it was raining/flooding was the worst commute experience ever for me.

My illustration friday's entry for this week's theme Bloom.
I wanted to get away this time from the obvious interpretation of the theme since I submitted one already.
