3" x 4" Sketchbook Studies

Quick small sketch studies... I usually prefer to draw on larger dimensions (full page of my sketchbook), but this time I forced myself to draw on limited 3" x 4" format. I used the storyboard template.

Pinoy Witch

October 12, 2005 6:04 PM | posted to sketchbook | permalink | comments (6)

Pencil on paper

Filipino version of a witch ('mangkukulam'). Growing up in the Philippines where you heard adults tell stories about them... this thing scared the hell out of me.

But I do not think Filipino witches use a couldron for spells, I just put that for effect... she's probably just cooking rice in there (haha). A Filipino witch could definitely pass as a Death Eater, imagine that a pinoy in Harry Potter :-)

Anyways, Penelope is currently having a "Draw a Witch" halloween contest. I do not think I'm going to submit this but I still want to explore this rich part of Philippine culture, like what Jio posted here... (tikbalang, kapre, aswang, duende) - Philippine mythological monsters and creatures.

Roots

My illustration friday entry for this week's theme roots.

I totally agree with Charlie on his comment on drawing trees:

Trees always seem like such a simple thing to draw, until you try to draw one in some detail and then they suddenly become quite complicated!

This happened many times studying my software development books. :-)

My five year old son saw me drawing this and said... "It's fun sleeping in the bookstore."

Bored with Life

August 2, 2005 11:37 PM | posted to sketchbook | permalink | comments (5)

Are you bored with life? Then throw yourself into some work you believe in with all your heart, live for it, die for it, and you will find happiness that you had thought could never be yours. - Dale Carnegie

Updated (8-5-2005): I just thought this might work for Illustration Friday's theme for this week "Empty". Being bored with life portrays emptiness...

Man and Tree

I found a quote for this drawing:

Plants are the young of the world, vessels of health and vigor; but they grope ever upward towards consciousness; the trees are imperfect men, and seem to bemoan their imprisonment, rooted in the ground. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Also, I submitted this for Everyday Matters Challenge #15 - "Draw a tree or trees, leaves or branches"

This sketch is based on earlier sketch I did.

Summer Harvest

August 1, 2005 6:00 AM | posted to sketchbook | permalink | comments (4)

For Everyday Matters Drawing Group challenge #26 - Draw Something...(or a Vegetable)

I know tomatoes are fruits :-) but these so happen to be our first harvest this summer. Sounds like we have a farm but actually just two tomato plant in our front yard :-). Kinda a house tradition to plant something during summer (like last year).

As for Everyday Matters, it is been good so far because it gives me a reason to draw from life.

Draw your Foot

July 31, 2005 9:32 PM | posted to sketchbook | permalink | comments (5)

Pencil on sketchbook.

I joined the Everyday Matters Drawing Group today, this is for challenge #23 - "Draw Your Foot".

This is drawn in front of a mirror, drawing with my other hand; which is a bad idea because this pose hurts your back :-)

update(8-1-2005): Ulk, I just noticed how bad this drawing is... I'm really not good drawing from life. I should always remember what I wrote here.

Updated (7/15/2005): I submitted this for Illustration Friday's theme "Karma". In Karma, something must have caused the storm...
