I turned on the commenting back on... (and as expected the spammers are back). I'm still too lazy to rework the web application for this site however I made some cosmetic changes. I made the layout wider so I can post 800px maximum width image.

Sorry I had to turn off commenting for a while because I was having serious problems with comment spam lately.
I've analyzed and observed the attacks for sometime now and the vulnerability points to "Session HiJacking"; actually, I'm kinda curious exactly how they were doing it. Well I guess on a positive note, this already forced me to research and pay more attention to computer security... and probably start to update the code for this site... more than two years old now.
Two Years of Blogging

I've been blogging for two years!
From my lame first post:
...why create a web log? I've been wanting to improve my writing, so what a better way than to write anything you want, when you have the urge. I will also include in the gallery creative works(photography, painting, drawings) I have been doing outside software development. Hopefully, I will find the discipline to post and update this often.
I guess I already gave up on that writing thing :-) I was thinking of something nice to write, but I'll just post these 4 drawings on my moleskine I did just now.
Hopefully I could still continue to blog for a long time.

I almost reached my allowed bandwidth limit for this month (2 Gig) so I turned much of the stuff on this site off for now. At the same time continue the development of the blogging engine for this site and redesign. But it is really tempting to just use pre-made ones... 5 minutes to install WordPress. Damn! Making me really think twice. More on this later...
Anyways, I move all the image files to Flickr then will just link images from there like this:

I saw this site was linked by About.Com yesterday. I only have a handful of links so it is always nice to discover new links like this.
Anyways, this was not a good week for me creatively (like what Penelope posts from time to time) drawing/painting seems just so difficult. Maybe I need to double my dose of Redbull or coffee :-)

I just found out yesterday that my (previously) ever reliable contact page is not sending any emails. It says "Your message has been successfully submitted." but there's no message being sent to me. I do not know how long it has been now that this is not working... Last night I checked my source code and made sure I have not made any changes to it... I think my web host has some explaining to do.
To those who sent messages thru my contact page and I have not responded... I am very sorry.
Building a Gallery

I'm slowly putting up works in the gallery (or portfolio). Most of the works already appeared in this blog except they are only 'selected' few and image files have larger dimensions. I'm still contemplating on whether to make it an external site or incorporaate the gallery in this blog; but the main goal of the site would still be to efficiently browse images without digging through the archives. Still a lot more design and development time needed.

Thank you for the feature :-)
Update: Of course I save what was written in the feature, they do not have permalink. It was so nice to be gone and forgotten, at least for me :-)
It is easy for any first-timer at Objects and Pixels to think that it is an artist's blog. It has a photo blog the contents of which can take your breath away. Then, there are the drawing/painting archive and the collection black and white drawings. One gets so awed that the logical next step is to get acquainted with the man behind the blog. One clicks the link to the about page and learns that the blogger is not a professional artist. In fact, the blog is "a place to explore Java, XHTML, CSS, and software development..." The blog actually runs on a custom made content management software that Diong, the Indy Pinoy behind Objects and Pixels, himself created.

After more than a week of development... finally I'm back. I'm so tired right now to write and I'm just so glad I brought up this site again. I also moved to another web hosting service, this time with my own private JVM. This just means I could start and stop the server anytime I want to, in which I will have a better development and deployment environment. As I stated on my previous post, I merge back my two blog sites into one. I also added "comments" functionality (finally), which I thought was just trivial to implement" well it is not. Oh another note to myself "make sure you check the version of the db of your server". I certainly learn from lots of the development mistakes stuff that I've done that probably cost me lots of time. I am certainly not done with the upgrade, I haven't touched the presentation part and I am still developing the gallery or image management piece of this site.

As I wrote here and here, separating my sites(this and diong) I think is not a good idea after all. Each of this blog site personally seems incomplete. I am currently re analyzing the whole information architecture of my sites and probably will merge back my two blogs again.
Development wise and in terms of writing Java code is not really a lot of work. Most of my db tables and object model would still be the same; much of it really is reorganization of content. O yeah, I have put off for too long the "comments feature" so I'll implement that on my next build.

I am really not satisfied with the usability of my site right now and I really think there is a need to rework much of the stuff in here.
It is pretty obvious I am not able to update this site often and it is not achieving its intended goal. It is really difficult for me to write code right now... I just need to get back at it and work hard again.

I put a new gallery and link pages to this site.
Updated 01/13/2005 - Dead link because of site update.
Aside from putting photos within the blog, I created the gallery page where I can group series of photographs and show them in a higher resolution, including drawings and paintings that I will be uploading to this site.
The links pages includes recommended links that interest me, whether websites, news items, books and other web resources found in the web.

So far this is one of the best and reliable answer I could find.
Servlet Best Practices, Part 2 by Jason Hunter and Robert Eckstein -- In part two of three in this series of book excerpts on servlet best practices from Java Enterprise Best Practices, learn about caching with servlets.
Interestingly I got lots of helpful insights when I found this same question posted some time ago at whitespace, one of the site I really admire.

I made the change. This site is now free of ( well not really) any software development posts.
All software related posts can now be found here.
This site probably will evolve into a photolog site and other things more creative.

My first entry in this site. Well not really because I moved some post from my personal site here.
I will try to eliminate or limit my personal site of any software development postings; I'll just post them here. Techinically though, I am not maintaining two separate web logs since both are stored in the same persistent layer. I am just separating the different views of the log entries where it is more appropriate for its purpose.
I want to focus this site solely for Java, CSS, and all other web related technology.

I considered my personal site (ObjectsAndPixels.Com/Diong) to be the same as ObjectsAndPixels.Com but I still think it is best to separate the two. One for a more professional looking site and /diong, will be kinda like my sketch pad, the more creative site, where, as I am doing here, post anything, out of the business side of things
I am researching right now of what content to put for ObjectsAndPixels.Com. Below are some ideas.
- Current projects/project logs
- Java related news/info/links
- CSS, webstandards related news/info/links
- Written articles... hmmm that is if I could write polished papers that would be useful to others.
As I set the distinction between the two sites, the visual design appearance of the pages should also convey this distinction. Still too much work...

On my previous posts I pointed out my difficulty developing the new version for my site mostly based on the technology that I use. Since this is my own site, I haven't really analyzed any user requirements...
Well I AM THE USER... my point is I just performed one of the most costly mistake in software development: "perform design and coding before gathering the requirements".
Ok... close all reference books, stop design, stop coding... and ask for user needs.

I've been working hard the last couple of weeks updating this site. The thing is... what currently on here seems to be very complicated to implement on the new version.
But I am making progress. My new site is Struts based and uses JSTL and custom taglibs as view helpers. All these are new to me so it takes so much time and effort to get it done.
I've read somewhere using Struts for a blog site is an overkill...maybe, but I've learned so much already. At least, I understand now the idea behind why use Struts at all in making web applications

I just added the archives last night. Except for minor adjustments and updates, I think I will stop working on this site for a while. My other design concept is with white background and use of black and red. Tried so hard to make it work, but I cannot put the pieces together. I guess I really like the use of monochromatic color and type as design elements. Experimented a bit though with details: the use of curves or type graphics in the corner of the context boxes. Life is so much easier with CSS...
Still updating...
