Having encountered the site of Ben Fry inspired me to maybe do some coding again to create applets.
Like many other Java developers, I learned to program in Java by developing applets but soon lost interest when I started learning to code using Servlets. The main thing is applets only run with JRE installed on users machine. and during those days of pre broadband and only dialup in homes, having users required to download 10 meg JRE is not a good thing.
It is still an issue now but things changed a lot since then. I think even AOL and most browsers comes with JRE with them. I am not sure how many have a least Java 2 (1.2) installed, but it is probably up above 75... I hope :-)
